Background: 'A very welcome account of Handel’s Athalia. Much of the choral singing is forthright and spirited. The solo singing is also on a high level. There is Emma Kirkby, cool, poised and alluring in Josabeth’s arias; Aled Jones producing very beautiful sound as the boy Joas; Anthony Rolfe Johnson, graceful in Mathan’s music; and to cap it all there is Dame Joan Sutherland in commanding form in the title-role. Dependable and often pleasantly crisp playing from the Academy of Ancient Music, and an excellent recording.' Gramophone |

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Gramophone Awards Collection - Penguin Guide 3 star 'Hogwood's splendid set is cast from strength, with Dame Joan Sutherland's richly vibrant singing contrasting with the pure silver of Emma Kirkby, not to mention the celestial treble of Aled Jones' |
