Here we find the 25-year-old Beethoven bursting with energy, flexing his intellectual and emotional muscles.

You can almost hear him 'growing' in the course of the op.10 set. Witty, challenging opening movements, deeply-felt slow movements (especially the D minor of No.3) and exuberant, presto finales.

The 'Pathétique' raises the emotional temperature still further: heavy, grinding dissonances and quicksilver flights of fancy in the first movement, a great melody in the second, and haunting finale.
