Background: With this second album in his current Beethoven series, Maurizio Pollini offers the composer's brilliant set of three early sonatas op.10 and the popular 'Pathétique' sonata op.13 - his première recordings of all these works. Here we find the 25-year-old Beethoven bursting with energy, flexing his intellectual and emotional muscles. You can almost hear him 'growing' in the course of the op.10 set. Witty, challenging opening movements, deeply-felt slow movements (especially the D minor of No.3) and exuberant, presto finales. The 'Pathétique' raises the emotional temperature still further: heavy, grinding dissonances and quicksilver flights of fancy in the first movement, a great melody in the second, and haunting finale. |
