Background: For his recording of St Matthew Passion, Paul McCreesh is taking a radical yet convincing approach. Following the path he began with his previous Bach project, he uses very limited forces. Techniques on early instruments have improved and a cleaner yet fuller vocal style has emerged. This recording is a major achievement for McCreesh. One of the main factors is the fine line-up of singers: Deborah York, Julia Gooding, Magdalena Kozená, Susan Bickley, Mark Padmore, James Gilchrist, Peter Harvey, and Stephan Loges - each an outstanding soloist and a remarkable consort singer. |
