Background: If there is a single work from the early twentieth century which can lay claim to be the most radical and revolutionary, it is probably Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps. This is the third and crowning achievement of the three ballets written for Diaghilev and his Ballets russes during the years 1910–13. Preceded by the Rimsky-Korsakov-influenced L’Oiseau de feu and Petrouchka, Le Sacre du printemps broke down every musical barrier and was the epitome of the emancipation of rhythm. Two more ballets complete this programme: Apollon musagète, the last of his works to be presented by Diaghilev, and Jeu de cartes. |
