Background: András Schiff returns to Bach's Goldberg Variations, the work he has long regarded as a veritable 'Mount Everest' of composition: 'the most important piece of music ever written for a solo instrument'. Now, Schiff takes on the Goldberg Variations again, this time as a live recording. From several concerts recorded by ECM, he chose the beautiful performance from the Stadtcasino, Basel. 'A marvellous hall', in Schiff’s estimate, and with a reverent audience hanging on every note. |
