Background: Des Canyons aux Etoiles was composed to mark the bicentennial of the United States celebrated in 1976. Messiaen found his inspiration for it when visiting the Canyons of Utah in 1972: the music resounds from a large chamber ensemble and its colorful richness and combination of themes and imagery reflects the Canyons.
