Background: Valery Gergiev joins forces with the Kirov Orchestra to showcase more great Russian orchestral music. The Fifth symphony premiered in Leningrad in 1937 and was a triumph. It represents a break with Shostakovich's musical past and yet his unmistakable fingerprints are all still present. The Ninth is among the shortest of Shostakovich's symphonies, and the five movements are therefore extremely concise. |
