Background: This generous collection of Stravinsky orchestral works proved one of best-selling CD reissues of the American audiophile classical label, Mercury Living Presence. It brought together one of MLP's principal conductors, Hungarian-born Antal Dorati, with one of the world's great orchestras, the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to a dazzling 1959 recording of the complete Firebird ballet, the other major work on this new SACD release is Stravinsky's lesser-known but magical symphonic poem The Song of the Nightingale, adapted from his early opera The Nightingale. Three shorter works complete this unusual programme, including the contemporaneous Fireworks, all recorded in 1964. |
