Background: 'Karajan's 1977 analogue version of No.4 is undoubtedly more compelling than his previous recordings and also in most respects preferable to the newer digital Vienna version. Similarly the 1976 reading of the Fifth stands out from his other recordings.

'Karajan had a special affinity with Tchaikovsky's Pathetique symphony. For many the 1977 version is the finest.' Penguin Guide.
