Background: The Planets is the most frequently performed piece of 20th century British music. The Berliner Philharmoniker who have not recorded The Planets since the legendary Karajan recording of 1981. It is entirely fitting that their British chief conductor, Simon Rattle should be the one to lead the world's greatest orchestra in this new and exciting journey. Coupling The Planets are four world première 'Asteroids' commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation and first performed in concert for this live recording 16th-18th March 2006. Shirley Apthorp reviewed the premieres in the Financial Times (21st March 2006): 'Rattle conducts the [Planets] suite with uncritical gusto, letting the orchestra's lush sheen show... This audacious project is carried by Rattle's flair, and nurtured with the optimal conditions needed to give new works a wider orbit. Watch the musical skies near you for further sightings of these rocky bodies.' |
