Background: In his third recital on Virgin Classics, Rolando Villazon shows a new side to his incredible vocal talent with a programme of Zarzuela arias. This album shows Villazon heading back to his roots, to the music of his home country where the Zarzuela singers are as acclaimed as the opera stars. Villazon is joined in this recording by Domingo, a man he is grateful to call his mentor, who conducts the Orquesta Comunidad de Madrid in their hometown and the birth-place of Zarzuela. Placido Domingo is no stranger to the repertoire as his parents were Zarzuela singers, originally from Madrid, who moved to Mexico when he was eight and ran a touring company. He grew up surrounded by the music and it inspired him to pursue a singing career. The experience of recording this album with Domingo was, as Villazon says, 'a continuing lesson'. |
