Background: Known for building up a strong discography of pieces, both familiar and unknown by a variety of baroque composers, Fabio Biondi and his ensemble Europa Galante return to the 18th century Italian Sinfonia. This style is generally considered as having had an important formative influence on the evolution of the Classical symphony. Of these sinfonie con titoli (symphonies with a title), the best known is Boccherini's 'Casa del Diavolo' (House of the Devil), which was inspired by Gluck's Don Juan and Orphee. All the other works are relatively unknown, and some have never been recorded before. Fabio Biondi thus furthers his musicological investigation by resuscitating composers such as Carlo Monza and Giuseppe Demachi and reinstating them alongside their better-known contemporaries Sammartini, Boccherini and Vivaldi. |
