Background: Judicium Salomonis dates from 1702 and was written while Charpentier was maître de musique at the Sainte-Chapelle, Paris. A work of vast proportions, it alternates instrumental movements, recitatives, arias, ensembles and choruses, the dramatic continuity provided by a narrator, Historicus. The motet was first performed in November 1702 on the occasion of the 'red mass' that ceremonially marked the reconvening of the Parlement de Paris. Charpentier studied in Italy as a young man, and there is no doubting his absorption of the mid-century Italian style. This work in particular, owes something to the oratorios of Carissimi. |
