Background: In a rare collaboration, the two major talents of Ian Bostridge and Antonio Pappano come together in a magnificent recording of Wolf Lieder. Wolf combines the defining elements of song inherited from Schubert and Schumann with a more compressed, intense and highly expressive style of lieder composition. He was incredibly responsive to poetry and all aspects of the song were led by his detailed readings. These three cycles, with poetry by Eichendorff, Mörike and Goethe are some of his most deeply affecting works. Ian Bostridge is at the peak of his powers, and his gift for bringing text to life is never more skilfully used. Pappano, a wonderful pianist as well as conductor, provides the perfect accompaniment. |
