Background: Recorded in concert in September 2005 at the Philharmonie in Berlin, this recording of Richard Strauss's monumental programmatic work, Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life) marks Simon Rattle's 9th release on EMI Classics with the Berlin Philharmonic. Receiving its first performance in Frankfurt in 1899, Ein Heldenleben portrays the life of a composer who adores his capricious wife and whose 'adversaries' are the pompous and nagging critics with whom he is prepared to do battle. Our 'hero' finally settles down to a life of contented pastoral retirement. Many parallels have been made between the composer’s musical 'hero' and Strauss himself. Set originally as incidental music for Molière's comedy about a boorish but good-hearted simpleton who makes a fortune in trade, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme recreates the style and mood of the 17th century in a 20th century manner. Strauss mocks the host of characters while musically quoting Lully, Wagner, and… himself! This studio recording of the nine movement concert suite for chamber orchestra was also recorded in September 2005. |
