Background: Schonberg's arrangements of other composers' music are often neglected, overshadowed by the many masterpieces of musicological significance his catalogue boasts, yet they were an area to which he devoted a considerable amount of time, transcribing all kinds of music, from popular Viennese songs to operetta excerpts and Strauss waltzes, as well as scores (re)composed by Zemlinsky and works by Bach and Brahms. His orchestration of Brahms's Piano Quartet in G minor op.25 dates from 1937 and was commissioned by the conductor Otto Klemperer. This orchestrated version, written in exemplary Brahmsian style, was soon, jokingly, to be referred to as Brahms's 'Fifth Symphony' It was in around 1907 that Schonberg set about studying the works of JS Bach with particular seriousness, in an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of the tonal system. |
