Background: An extraordinary recording of Aida by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, the Vienna Philharmonic and a cast of world renowned soloists. As usual Harnoncourt has thoroughly researched and studied the original scores of the work, in order to recreate as closely as possible the sound Verdi intended. 'Nikolaus Harnoncourt's was truly a 'dolce Aida'… there was a softness and sweetness to the music that at its best brought a new dimension to the score, and it was this that made the opera sound so different. The best example of the effectiveness of this approach was Matti Salminen's outstanding Ramfis; the high priest takes on a new level of malevolence when he gently croons his lines, rather than barking them out at a commanding forte..'
