Background: Daniel Barenboim performs Symphony No.9 with the Staatskapelle Berlin, an orchestra with a history stretching back to the 1570s. It is the living embodiment of the Austro-German tradition out of which Mahler's music developed and evolved. Mahler's symphonies occupy a significant place in the transition from late 19th Century Romanticism to 20th Century Modernism, from Beethoven via Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Bruckner to Mahler's symphonies then pointing further into the future. |
