Background: Two major, but rarely heard, symphonies by composer Nikolai Myaskovsky an unsung hero of Russian music. During his lifetime Myaskovsky was habitually mentioned in the same pantheon as Shostakovich and Prokofiev, and his work regularly brought him into conflict with Stalin's regime. Myaskovsky has been called 'the father of the Soviet symphony', and left a cycle of seventy-seven carefully crafted and adventurous symphonies. His Sixth Symphony is a deeply personal and turbulent work, reflecting on themes of war and revolution. It adopts the epic scale of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, with a choral finale echoing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The Tenth Symphony, in contrast, is tightly packed into one 15-minute movement, and is noted for its bold use of richly extended harmonies. |
