Background: Erno Dohnányi's orchestral output is widely regarded as the composer's best work and is distinguished by a remarkable colourfulness and virtuosic treatment of every instrument. The three works on this disc clearly represent the three different periods of his life as a mature composer; the Berlin, Hungarian, and American periods. Notwithstanding the contrasting traits of these periods, there is a strong sense of consistency that strikes the listener. Dohnanyi matured early and remained true to his own voice in an era of emphasis on the avant-garde. In the same way he remained true to his favourite musical form – the variation form. He used this form frequently - all three compositions featured on this release incorporate either a movement or at least a section in variation form – and it can in fact be seen to underlie his whole compositional approach, not least in the works featured on this recording. Also noteworthy is the emphasis on dialogue between individual instruments and groups of instruments, which often culminates in the contrapuntal treatment of different themes. |
