Founded in 1999 the orchestra is based in Seville where Muslims, Christians and Jews have traditionally lived in peace for seven centuries.

Daniel Barenboim, the Argentinean / Israeli conductor and pianist, and his friend the late Edward Said, Palestinian writer and critic, established the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and Workshop as an opportunity for young musicians from Middle Eastern countries to combine musical study with dialogue and reflection on the critical Israeli-Palestinian situation.
