Background: Sakari Oramo and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra are in the midst of an exploration of the works of Gustav Mahler. They bring their characteristically 'vivid, intensely musical' approach to their interpretation of this powerful, yearning symphonic masterpiece, used as the theme for Visconti's film Death in Venice. Following the performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony, the Birmingham Post wrote, 'what a triumph [Oramo] made of it. Rip-roaring horns… biting brass, woodcut-clear woodwinds and surging strings all added their weight to the conductor's inspiring reading.' The Evening Mail added: 'Under the baton of Sakari Oramo, the CBSO took the audience on an exhilarating and sometimes unsettling journey full of dramatic twists and turns. The work's concluding bars brought us a blaze of sunshine that will glow long into the winter.' |
