Background: The exodus of late-Romantic Russian musicians who survived the end of the Romanovs in 1918 was among the first great culture drains of the 20th century. The best of those who made it to the New World were assured of legendary status, even Hollywood anointment. Those who opted for Europe had to settle for less. To survive outside Russia, Rachmaninov recognised that he had to give concerts and learn other people's music. He cut piano rolls and made recordings, leaving a legacy in the process. Serge Bortkiewicz would have none of it. Preferring increasingly to play only his own works, he resisted the idea of mechanical reproduction. By the time he realised he might have been wrong, he was too old - and it was too late. |
