Background: The genesis of John Corigliano's Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra was deeply connected to the orchestra for which it was composed, the New York Philharmonic. The work was commissioned as one of a series designed to highlight the orchestra’s principal players - in this case, Stanley Drucker, who has been principal clarinettist since 1948.

Zhou Long's The Immortal received its world premiere at the 2004 BBC Proms. The composer said, 'The Immortal pays tribute to the influence of Chinese artists and intellectuals in the 20th century.'
