Background: Invitation to the Seraglio focuses on the era when the Ottoman passion for European music began to emerge; when Liszt gave recitals at the imperial court; when, during the Crimean War, heroic marches and popular dances, composed by the ladies of the harem as well as young Ottoman princes, were published by European houses. Composer, conductor and musicologist Emre Araci founded the London Academy of Ottoman Court Music in 1998 with the express purpose of presenting Euro-Ottoman repertoire. Bringing this unfamiliar sound-world alive, his reconstructions of Ottoman Court Music have helped unearth a wealth of forgotten nineteenth-century Ottomania fusing the exotic manner with European drawing-room styles from the Lanner/D’Albert/Strauss era. |
