Background: The Swiss-born pianist Karl Engel (b. 1923), studied with Alfred Cortot in Paris and performed and recorded with a distinguished roster of artists. Karl Engel recorded the Mozart piano concertos in the Großer Saal of the Mozarteum, Salzburg, between 1974 and 1978.

The Mozarteum Orchestra was founded in 1841 by the composer's widow (Constanze) and the city of Salzburg.
