Background: Although he spent most of his life in France, Maurice Ohana was born in Casablanca to parents of Spanish-Gibraltarian origin who were British citizens. His music is considered to belong to the French compositional mainstream of the second half of the 20th century, yet his cultural origins prevent his being described simply as a French composer. It was Ohana's Spanish heritage and his experience of African tribal music that influenced the development of his compositional style and language, tempered by his French education, training and environment. |
