Background: The earliest of Schubert's 21 keyboard sonatas is that in E major, D157, written in 1815 when the composer was just eighteen years old. By the time he came to write the A minor Sonata, D845, he had the experience of writing over a dozen sonatas behind him, and it was with some justification that the first publication of the work in 1825 described it as his 'Premiere Grande Sonate'. It is not known whether or not Schubert intended the 3 Klavierstucke D946 to be part of a set of pieces like his two sets of Impromptus; it was Brahms who prepared the pieces for publication in 1868 and who gave them the title by which they are generally known. |
