Background: All of these qualities can be found in the two symphonies recorded here and which belong to the series of twelve 'London' symphonies. The Symphony No.99 is the first of the set of six written by Haydn for his second visit to England. Symphony No.101 was written during Haydn's second stay in London, and has the nickname 'The Clock', derived from the pendulum-like movement at the beginning of the Andante. |
