Background: The compositional history of the Fifth Symphony progressed - as always with Anton Bruckner - in a roundabout fashion. He completed the score between January and May 1876. Then, he took up revising the Third Symphony and, subsequently, made a revision of the First. Afterwards, he turned back to the Fifth. By the end of 1877 he had finished his revisions to the Finale, had begun revising the first movement and had directed his attention to the Adagio. In 1878 the revisions of the entire score were completed. Bruckner was never to hear his Fifth Symphony performed. The manuscript lay untouched for fifteen years until Franz Schalk decided to perform the work in 1894. By that time Bruckner was seriously ill and could not attend the performance; he did, however, suggest making several corrections. |
