Background: The composition of the oratorio Christus occupied Franz Liszt from 1862 until 1866, during which time he lived in Rome and took the tonsure. Despite its length and the large orchestral and choral forces a lot of the work is of almost chamber proportions and quite personal in mood.

Nevertheless, the resources needed to perform Christus have hindered its acceptance into the choral repertory and it remains something of a rarity.
