Background: Johann Strauss 'hand-tailored' many of his immortal waltzes and polkas for his own orchestra and interpreted his own works as conductor and concertmaster. However, he never wrote any piano music. The first piano transcriptions of his dances were issued by publishers who arranged them for their first printed editions. But this did not stop performers, many of them outstanding pianists, from taking pen to hand and producing their own waltz paraphrases abounding in ingenious technical refinements. |
