Background: Dmitri Shostakovich ventured into the field of chamber music with his String Quartet No.1 of 1938, a cheerfully lyrical piece that he himself described as his 'Spring Quartet'. When they heard the work, the Beethoven Quartet asked Shostakovich to write a piano quintet for them. He agreed, and by 1940 the piece was finished. Barely six months after the first performance of his Piano Quintet, the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 brought with it a drastic change in Shostakovich's life. The composer lost his dear friend, the musicologist Ivan Sollertinsky, to a heart attack in 1944. It was to Sollertinsky's memory that Shostakovich dedicated his Second Piano Trio. |
