Background: The Poem of Ecstasy op.54 premiered in New York in 1907. The length of the work, inspired by Wagner's Tristan, may surprise the listener. In its definitive form, The Poem of Ecstasy is a combination of symphonic tone poem and symphony in one movement, constructed in a broad sonata form, a sort of monolith typical of all the works of Scriabin's last years. The Divine Poem, the title usually given to Alexander Scriabin's Third Symphony in C major, was written in 1903-1904 and premiered in Paris in 1905 under the baton of Arthur Nikisch. The score marks his break with the influence of Chopin. On the other hand, echoes of Wagner are constantly apparent in the instrumentation, the harmonic language, and the thematic workmanship. |
