Background: The Theme of this CD is the dilemmas and consequences of making pacts with the devil. Huit Scenes ('Eight Scenes') was Berlioz's visionary first Faust project. Berlioz consciously set out to break the conventional mould. He chose eight scenes from Nerval's translation of Faust, each in a different form, without seeking to follow the dramatic development of Goethe's verse play. Liszt too had been illuminated by his discovery of Goethe's poem. Less well-known are the Two Episodes from Lenau's Faust (1860). As their title indicates, they were inspired by the Austrian poet Nikolaus Lenau, not Goethe. Wagner's Overture to Goethe's 'Faust', which he finished in January 1840 and re-orchestrated in 1843, came both as a recreation between Rienzi and The Flying Dutchman and as an abortive attempt to reproduce the model of a dramatic symphony in the manner of Berlioz. |
