Background: The Fourth Symphony occupies a special place in Bruckner's output as it is the only one to which he gave a title. The first manuscript of the score already bears the superscription 'Romantic'. Bruckner later supplied some poetic descriptions of the work, however these descriptions should not be construed as forming a clear-cut programme. As in the case of Beethoven's 'Pastoral' Symphony, Bruckner's 'Romantic' Symphony does not paint a picture of nature with the help of music. Rather, music becomes an image of nature itself. There are four versions of the Romantic - three of the whole symphony (1874, 1878 and 1886), and one (1880) in which only the final movement was rewritten. |
