Background: Brahms' Violin Sonata No.2 was composed in 1886 in Burma. Having completed his Fourth Symphony, he was now powerfully drawn to chamber music. The Violin Sonata No.2 exudes the carefree atmosphere of those weeks of summer holidays. The Violin Sonata No.3 is especially remarkable for the impassioned character of its outer movements and their virtuoso challenges while the simple slow movement proves particularly expressive. Elgar's Violin Sonata was written in 1918 in peaceful, rural seclusion while the upheavals of the Great War took their toll around him. The markedly Brahmsian tone of the opening movement suggests that the composer consciously sought to evoke the sounds of an earlier age. The expressive melody of the middle section of the second movement was written after receiving news that a close friend had been injured in an accident. The finale is broad and soothing, representing Elgar's reaction to the death of the sonata's dedicatee, Marie Joshua. |
