Background: Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony was given its premiere in 1953 - after Stalin's death - in Leningrad under the baton of Yvgeny Mravinsky. It was an immediate success in Russia, and soon gained great popularity abroad as well. Once again, Shostakovich had managed to fulfil both his own expectations and those of the public with the utmost success. It is generally agreed that the Tenth is the finest of all fiteen Shostakovich symphonies, both in its skilful balance of moods and in terms of technical mastery. |
