Background: Composed between 1824 and 1847, Mendelssohn’s Lieder are not as well known as some his other works. Written to texts by some of the greatest poets of the time Mendelssohn’s Lieder have been criticized for their lack of originality. The basis for this criticism is that Mendelssohn rarely deviated from the path followed by his teachers Zelter and Berger, but the critics have often not appreciated the depth of his music.
