Background: The Birmingham Music Festival committee asked Mendelssohn to conduct the festival in August 1846 and bring a new oratorio with him. The libretto was based closely on the Lutheran bible. The composer was anxious to use biblical language throughout. His concern for language also appears in the immense care he took over the translation into English for the performance in Birmingham. Two months before the festival, the chorus were given the music of part one, but the last chorus of part two arrived only nine days before the festival began. Despite there being an orchestra of 125 and a chorus of 270 there were only two full rehearsals two days before the concert. The performance was an outstanding success. |
