Background: In 1873, Bruckner took two early symphonies and requested Wagner’s permission to dedicate one of them to him. Wagner chose the D minor and gave Bruckner a letter encouraging the Vienna Philharmonic to accept the work for performance. Wagner’s recommendation did not help Bruckner. The Vienna Philharmonic refused to find adequate rehearsal time. Bruckner then revised the symphony, but even in its second version, the Third Symphony failed to impress the Orchestra. Eventually, in 1877, Bruckner was invited to conduct the work in a performance that proved a disaster. The orchestra purposely played badly for the terrified conductor. The audience’s reaction ranged from protest to open contempt. In 1889, galvanised by the success of his Seventh Symphony Bruckner undertook a third revision of his ‘Wagner Symphony’. In 1890 Hans Richter conducted the Vienna Philharmonic in a performance that was an undisputed triumph. For the following decades the 1889 revisions remained the standard in performances of the Third Symphony. Since then the work has become one of Bruckner’s most popular symphonies. A new edition of the 1877 version appeared in the mid 20th century within a complete critical edition of all Bruckner’s symphonies; this was further overhauled in the 1970s. The present recording is based on the 1877 version. |
