Background: The importance attached to the six violin sonatas BWV1014-1019 was recognised as early as 1802 when Bach's first biographer, Johann Nicolaus Forkel, drew attention to the skill needed on the parts of both the violinist and the keyboard player. The full title of the sonatas explains why they are different from anything that had come before: 'Sei Suonate a Cembalo (con-)certato e Violino solo, col Basso per Viola da Gamba accompagnata se piace'. The keyboard instrument is named first - rather than the solo instrument - and it is apparent that the keyboard no longer fulfils a role as mere accompanist. There is a fully written-out keyboard part rather than the then more usual figured bass that simply indicated the harmonic outline of the music. |
