Background: It is now generally agreed that it was Giuseppe Torelli who established the concerto for solo violin as an independent genre at the end of the 17th century, and that it was Antonio Vivaldi who laid down the rules for its formal design. By contrast, the history of the harpsichord concerto is considerably less clear-cut. Although he may not have created the genre, Johann Sebastian Bach was none the less one of the very first composers to have written concertante keyboard works. It must be stressed, however, that the majority of his concertos for one, two, three or four harpsichords are transcriptions of pieces that he had written for other solo instruments, mainly the violin. We also know that at Weimar, where he first encountered Italian music, Bach wrote no fewer than five organ concertos and sixteen harpsichord concertos based on string concertos by Italian composers or by others who wrote in the Italian style. |
