Background: With Lucia di Lammermoor, composed in 1835, Donizetti became famous throughout Europe. Lucia is generally considered to be his finest score and the archetype of Italian Romantic opera. Donizetti was heavily inspired by Rossini but after 1832 his works showed original touches and personal distinction.
