Background: His First Symphony in 1925 immediately established his importance as a 20th century symphonic composer. Conductors such as Walter, Stokowski, and Toscanini included it in their repertoire and introduced Shostakovich to Western Europe and America.

Shostakovich wrote his Ninth Symphony in 1945. It shows him to be a neo-classicist. Shostakovich's refusal to compose the type of symphony expected of him was proof of enormous moral courage.
