Background: Before the Requiem, Verdi was known exclusively for his operas, which made him the most popular composer in Europe. Composed in honour of two men for whom Verdi had the greatest admiration, Rossini and the poet Manzoni, his requiem is a work of highly concentrated emotion, covering the range of human feeling directly and powerfully.
