Background: After Vivaldi's death and during the 19th century, his work was known to scholars, but his real rediscovery dates only from the 20th century and the publication of his instrumental scores in 1947. Today, he is among the best known, most listened to composers of all time.

In 1976 a recording of the op.8 led by Nikolaus Harnoncourt was released that became the most advanced point of research based on the study of different performance practices. One can speak of pre and post Harnoncourt; Il Giardino Armonico's point of departure was Harnoncourt and the ensemble has further developed its interpretation.
