Background: Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker once again excel themselves in this emotionally-charged repertoire. The album comprises three of the five works by Stravinsky which contain the word 'symphony' in their titles, including the Symphony in C which Sir Simon has never before performed and which the BPO haven't played for over 20 years. Perhaps the best-known of the works on this recording is the Symphony of Psalms, which uses a choir throughout singing Latin-language psalm settings against a background of a slightly unconventional orchestra without clarinets, violins or violas, but with two pianos. These are typical 'neoclassical' works, all composed within around 15 years of each other and all written for American orchestras. |
