Background: 'And the Beethoven! They played Beethoven differently from the way Beethoven had been played before!' So said the president of New York’s Juilliard School of Music, the composer William Schuman, after the Juilliard String Qt had been summoned into existence in 1946. Today the Juilliards are regarded as one of the greatest of all string quartets, not least on account of their Beethoven recording which received a Grammy Award. In 1975 they gave a Beethoven concert at Polling in Upper Bavaria, of which this DVD is a unique document, showing them midway through a success story that has now lasted more than six decades.
