Background: In his short life George Gershwin (1898-1937) became, perhaps, the most successful of all the composers of popular songs for Broadway musicals. It was the bandleader Paul Whiteman who, in 1924, persuaded the young Gershwin to write an extended piece for performance by his jazz orchestra. The result was the Rhapsody in Blue. After this Gershwin wrote many great works for the concert hall and even the opera house: works that are now in the repertoire of many of the world's great orchestras. |
